Aki Sato

Aki Sato is a textile artist whose handwoven works embody a quiet dialogue between material, color, and time. After studying textile design at Nagaoka Institute of Design, she trained at a dyeing and weaving studio in Kyoto before establishing her independent practice in 2009. She is now based in Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture, where she creates textiles using traditional handweaving techniques.

Working almost exclusively with silk, Sato oversees every stage of production herself—from preparing and naturally dyeing the yarns to weaving each piece by hand on a traditional loom. The resulting textiles are marked by subtle tonal variations, delicate textures, and an understated elegance that reflects the inherent character of the fibers and the slow rhythm of their making.

Drawing inspiration from the changing seasons, shifting light, and the quiet beauty of everyday life, Sato's work embraces the Japanese appreciation for restraint and imperfection. Rather than seeking uniformity, her textiles celebrate the gentle irregularities that emerge through the handmade process, allowing each woven piece to possess its own distinct presence.

Whether fashioned as tea mats, table mats, or other functional textiles, Sato's works blur the boundary between art and daily ritual.
