Based in Gimhae, South Korea, ceramist Kimo An has been handcrafting distinctive ceramic ware for several decades. Working from his studio and showroom, he uses traditional wood-firing methods in a kiln he built in his backyard.
Each piece undergoes both a bisque firing and a glaze firing in the wood-fired kiln—a process with a failure rate as high as 50-75%. Uncompromising in his standards, Kimo A does not hesitate to shatter and discard any piece that falls short of his vision.
His work is distinguished by natural ash splattering and delicate crazing, qualities that imbue his white porcelain and buncheong ware with a rich, weighty character.
