Japanese Ceramic Dotted Mug
Handcrafted by Japanese ceramic artist Masanori Tanaka, this mug is finished in a rich dark chocolate-brown glaze and decorated with a softly irregular cream-colored dotted pattern. The contrast between the deep exterior and lighter dots gives the piece a playful graphic quality while retaining the earthy character of handmade Japanese pottery.
The interior is glazed in a warm olive-color, creating a subtle contrast with the darker glazed exterior. The handle is thoughtfully shaped with a slightly pressed-down upper section, creating a natural resting point for the thumb and making the mug especially comfortable to hold.
Its gently tapered form, hand-shaped handle, and variations in the placement and size of the dots give each mug its own distinct character. Compact and tactile, it is well suited for coffee, tea, or other small servings.

About Masanori Tanaka: Masanori Tanaka is a Japanese ceramic artist from Dachi, Gifu Prefecture, a region known for its long tradition of ceramic production. Working primarily with functional vessels, Tanaka drew from the expressive qualities of Japanese pottery while developing a distinctly personal approach to form, surface, and decoration.
His work is characterized by earthy glazes, gently irregular shapes, and graphic motifs that bring a sense of playfulness to everyday objects. Rather than emphasizing perfect uniformity, Tanaka allowed subtle variations in glaze, form, and decoration to remain visible, preserving the presence of the maker’s hand in each piece.
