Meet the Japanese Ceramic Uzushio Bowl, wheel-thrown by ceramic artist Tadashi Tomita based in Shiga Prefecture, Japan.
This small flower-shaped bowl is made by ceramic artist Tadashi Tomita (富田 正) of Seisho Kiln (正祥窯) in Shigaraki, Japan.
Named Uzushio (うず潮), meaning “whirling tide” or “whirlpool,” the bowl has a gently undulating form that evokes the movement of water. Its softly scalloped, flower-like silhouette brings a subtle sense of rhythm to the table, while the intimate scale makes it particularly suited for small side dishes, vegetables, condiments, or sweets.
The mark impressed on the underside reads “正祥” (Seisho), the name of Tomita's kiln.
Dimensions: approx. Ø 4.75" x H 1.5"
About Tadashi Tomita: Tomita's work is rooted in Shigaraki, one of Japan's historic pottery regions. Born in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1949, he moved to Shigaraki in 1977 and established his own kiln, Seisho-gama, in 1991. Working from Shigaraki for decades, Tomita creates functional vessels that balance the expressive character of clay and glaze with forms intended for everyday use.
Made in Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture, Japan.
