Japanese Gohonde (御本手) Yunomi Tea Cup

Regular price $40.00 USD

Meet the wheel-thrown Yunomi Tea Cup, finished in a soft gohonte glaze, characterized by delicate blush markings that emerge organically through atmospheric firing. The surface reveals subtle tonal variation — warm pink undertones suspended beneath a translucent milky glaze — creating the quiet depth associated with traditional Japanese tea ceramics.

In Japanese ceramics, gohonde (御本手) refers to a distinctive style of surface coloration historically admired in tea ware, recognized by soft pink, peach, or blush-like patches that appear unpredictably during firing. Originally associated with Korean-made tea bowls commissioned for Japanese tea practitioners in the Momoyama and Edo periods, gohonte surfaces were prized for their subtle irregularity and painterly warmth. The markings are not applied decoration, but the result of nuanced kiln interactions between clay, glaze, iron content, and atmosphere — making each firing inherently unique.

This cup embraces those qualities through a restrained cylindrical form with slight asymmetry at the waist, emphasizing the hand of the maker and the responsiveness of the material. Resting on a trimmed foot, the vessel balances refinement with tactility, functioning both as an everyday drinking object and as a quiet study in surface, process, and imperfection.
