Modeled after Korean Yi Dynasty (1392-1910), Buncheong wares (in Korean) is called Kohiki in Japanese and typically refers to an iron-rich clay body covered with white slip and then a translucent glaze. In Japan, the Kohiki style started with Korean potters and appealed greatly to the busho chajin or warrior-tea men of the late 1500s. Therefore, Kohiki is a style closely associated with tea. The most famous kohiki chawan (tea bowl) in Japan is named "Matsudaira" and is in the collection of the Hatakeyama Memorial Museum of Art in Tokyo.

Kyoyaki (京kyo Kyoto, 焼yaki fired) means ceramics made in Kyoto and is also referred to as kiyomizuyaki, which strictly speaking refers to pottery made in the area around Kiyomizu temple in Kyoto. Kyoyaki and kiyomizuyaki are jointly designated as traditional crafts by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, meaning they are made using traditional techniques that reflect the country's history and lifestyle.
