Japanese Raku Kōgō with Crane Motif
Handcrafted by Raku Studio Waraku in Kyoto, this ceramic kōgō (香合), or incense container, takes a hexagonal form with a sculptural crane extending gracefully across its lid. The raised ivory-white motif stands in soft contrast against the warm brown glaze, lending dimension and movement to the small vessel.
The crane (tsuru, 鶴) is an auspicious motif in Japanese culture, traditionally associated with longevity and good fortune. Opening the kōgō reveals a vivid turquoise-green glazed interior scattered with delicate gold flecks, an unexpected luminous detail concealed within its restrained exterior.
Traditionally used in the Japanese tea ceremony to hold incense, kōgō are often selected with consideration for season and occasion. This piece brings together the tactile character of Raku ware with the symbolic beauty of the crane and a richly decorated interior, making it equally compelling as a functional tea object or a small work of art.
The piece comes beautifully presented in a traditional paulownia wood (kiri) box.

About Raku Studio Waraku: The kiln was established around 1830 in the Gion district of Kyoto. The original kiln name was Tanzakuya. The given name of the first master was Hitizaemon, but the name Tanzakuya came from Tanzaku-rou, a teahouse located just in front of the main gate of the Yasaka Shrine, where Hitizaemon was the proprietor.
In 1918, Admiral Heihachirou Togo visited the kiln and during his visit penned the characters for “Waraku.” Wa refers to harmony, raku refers to joy. The 4th Generation Master, Shohiti Kawasaki, was grateful for the honour bestowed by Admiral Togo and changed the name of the kiln to Raku Studio Waraku, which is still the name as the kiln reaches its 8th generation master.
Raku Studio Waraku is proud of its 180 years of tradition; the Kawasaki family is determined to preserve and continue the 400 year history of raku ceramics for future generations.
