Japanese Shigaraki Ash-Glazed Tea Bowl with Brushwork

Regular price $100.00 USD

Handcrafted in Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture, one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns with over 1,260 years of ceramic history, this tea bowl embodies the quiet, unpretentious beauty that has long defined Shigaraki ware.

Formed from iron-rich clay, the bowl features a soft gray ash glaze layered over a warm earthen body, with expressive charcoal brushwork flowing naturally around its surface. Flecks within the glaze, subtle tonal variations, and areas of exposed clay reflect the unpredictable character of high-fired ceramics, making each piece entirely unique.

The gently rounded form sits comfortably in the hands, while the unglazed foot reveals the rich reddish clay beneath, creating a pleasing contrast between raw texture and glossy glaze. Designed for everyday tea, the bowl is equally suited for matcha, sencha, or small servings of soup or desserts.

Simple yet deeply expressive, it reflects the Shigaraki philosophy of finding beauty in natural materials, spontaneity, and the marks left by the firing process.
