Japanese Shigaraki Yohen Ceramic Bowl, Charcoal with Drippy Glaze
Meet the Japanese Shigaraki Ceramic Bowl, Charcoal with Drippy Glaze, wheel-thrown by Tanii Naotoshi and Tanii Makoto of Yuraku-gama in Shiga Prefecture in Japan.
Located in Koka City, Shiga Prefecture, Shigaraki is one of Japan's six old kilns, with a history that goes back 1260 years. In 1976, Shigaraki-yaki (Shigaraki ware) was designated as a traditional craft in Japan. The kiln change effect used on the bowl was created by changing the temperature of the kiln during firing, in order to adjust the rate at which different glazes slowly drip down the sides from top to bottom.
Yohen refers to glaze effects or surface changes produced as a result of the kiln atmosphere, fluctuations in heat, placement in the kiln, ash fall, reduction/oxidation shifts, etc. Such variation is often celebrated in Japanese pottery as adding character and uniqueness to each piece.
The bowl is great for whisking and drinking matcha from or can be used as a rice or soup bowl.
It comes beautifully packaged in a branded box, thus perfect for gifting.
