Japanese Shigaraki Ceramic Katakuchi Shallow Bowl
A shallow katakuchi bowl from Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture, one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kiln regions. Shigaraki ware is known for the expressive character of its clay and the subtle variations that emerge through firing.
This piece has a quiet, earthy surface in soft gray, sand, and muted green tones. Concentric throwing lines remain visible throughout the interior, while an incised motif at the center adds a subtle graphic element without overwhelming the natural character of the clay.
The gently raised rim gathers into a small pouring spout, or katakuchi (片口), giving the shallow form both function and a distinctive asymmetry. Viewed from the side, its restrained profile and slightly irregular edge reveal the hand of the maker.
Traditionally, Shigaraki clay is valued for its coarse, mineral-rich quality and the unpredictable surface effects created through firing—qualities that give each vessel an individual expression.
