Japanese Shigaraki Chawan/Hanwan
Handcrafted in Shigaraki, one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, this chawan/hanwan embodies the quiet beauty and rustic character for which the region is renowned. Thrown in a rich, iron-bearing clay, the bowl reveals a subtle constellation of natural feldspar inclusions that emerge during firing, creating a softly speckled surface with remarkable depth and texture.
Its gently rounded form sits comfortably in the hands, while the earthy tones and understated silhouette reflect the aesthetics of wabi-sabi—an appreciation for simplicity, imperfection, and the passage of time. The unglazed surface bears the traces of fire and clay, making each bowl entirely unique. While its appearance is rustic and textured, the surface is actually smooth to the touch, creating a pleasing contrast between its rough, earthy look and its refined feel.
Ideal for matcha preparation and tea ceremony, this bowl also serves beautifully as an everyday vessel for soup, fruit, or small servings. A timeless example of Shigaraki craftsmanship, it invites a moment of quiet reflection with every use.
