Meet apanese Shigaraki Hira-nari 平形 Matcha Bowl, handcrafted in Shiga Prefecture in Japan. Located in Koka City, Shiga Prefecture, Shigaraki is one of Japan's six old kilns, with a history that goes back 1260 years. In 1976, Shigaraki-yaki (Shigaraki ware) was designated as a traditional craft in Japan.
A flat shaped matcha bowls are known as Hira-nari ( 平形 in Japanese; meaning flat shape) and features a wide mouth and shallow interior, so tea cools easily. It is also called a summer tea bowl. Due to the shallow interior, it takes some getting used to it in order to make tea well.
