Japanese Shigaraki Ishime Bowl
Meet the Japanese Shigaraki Ishime Bowl, hand-crafted in Shigaraki, one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns.
Rooted in a ceramic tradition dating back to the 12th century, Shigaraki ware is known for its raw, expressive character shaped by earth and fire. The local clay, rich in feldspar, produces a naturally coarse surface where small inclusions emerge through firing, creating a textured, stone-like quality.
This bowl carries an ishime (stone-textured) surface, with natural speckling and a softly irregular rim. During high-temperature firing, the glaze moves and settles across the form, revealing quiet tonal variations, with a deeper green gently pooling at the center.
Rather than pursuing uniformity, Shigaraki ware embraces irregularity—subtle warping, variations in glaze, and the visible trace of the kiln. Each piece is shaped not only by the maker’s hand, but also by the unpredictable interaction of clay, ash, and flame.
Well suited for small servings, side dishes, or tea accompaniments, the bowl brings a calm, grounded presence to the table.
