Japanese Shigaraki Koshiabura (コシアブラ) Flower Bowl
A sculptural Shigaraki bowl inspired by the flower known in Japan as koshiabura (コシアブラ), a native deciduous tree whose young leaves are traditionally gathered as a spring mountain vegetable.
The bowl is formed with gently overlapping, petal-like sections that rise and fall around the rim, giving the vessel an organic silhouette that shifts depending on the angle from which it is viewed. The softly rounded body rests on a small foot, balancing the expressive floral form with a quiet sense of weight.
Made in Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture, one of Japan’s historic pottery centers and Six Ancient Kilns, the piece carries the earthy character for which Shigaraki ware is known. The region’s clay is traditionally prized for its coarse texture, resilience, and the nuanced surfaces that emerge through firing.
Here, a deep charcoal-black surface draws attention to the bowl’s sculptural contours. Subtle variations in tone and texture remain visible across the clay, while the irregular rim preserves a sense of movement—as though the flower has just begun to open.
Both functional and sculptural, the bowl can be used for serving small dishes or simply appreciated as an object in its own right.
