Japanese Shigaraki Mossy Green Tea Cup, Cooling Reduction
Meet the Japanese Shigaraki Mossy Green Tea Cup, wheel thrown by artisans in Shigaraki, Koka City—one of Japan’s six ancient kiln sites with over 1,260 years of pottery heritage.
It is hand-thrown using coarse red clay and finished with a fluid ash glaze that melts into the coarse surface. During cooling reduction, the glaze develops mossy green tones, pooling and settling along the form as it solidifies. The contrast between the rugged clay body and the luminous glaze gives the piece a quietly elemental presence.
At the base of the teacup, a small shell is used during firing to steady the form. Over time, it fuses into the surface—becoming a subtle, integral part of the piece.
