Japanese Shigaraki Mossy Green Tea Cup, Cooling Reduction
Meet the Japanese Shigaraki Mossy Green Tea Cup, wheel thrown by artisans in Shigaraki, Koka City—one of Japan’s six ancient kiln sites with over 1,260 years of pottery heritage.
The piece is distinguished by the deep, subdued hues of its vitrified surface, the textured clay body flecked with white stone, the subtle impressions left by shell supports, the tokin-carved foot, and the fluid glaze movement achieved by intentionally tilting the vessel during firing.
During cooling reduction, the glaze develops mossy green tones, pooling and settling along the form as it solidifies. The contrast between the rugged clay body and the luminous glaze gives the piece a quietly elemental presence.
