Japanese Shigaraki Sakazome Yunomi
Meet the Japanese Shigaraki Sakazome Yunomi, a teacup defined by its quiet gradient and natural firing marks.
Crafted in Shigaraki—one of Japan’s six ancient kiln sites—this piece highlights the raw beauty of its iron-rich clay. The glaze settles in a soft transition across the surface, known as sakazome, where tones shift organically from warm ivory to earthy brown. The effect feels almost like a landscape line, shaped by gravity, ash, and flame within the kiln.
The coarse clay body gently emerges beneath the glaze, offering subtle texture and depth. Speckling and tonal variation reflect the unpredictability of the firing, giving each cup its own character. A slightly flared rim provides a comfortable lip, while the compact foot grounds the form with balance.
Ideal for daily tea, this yunomi embodies the understated sensibility of Shigaraki—where material, process, and time come together in a quiet, enduring form.
Each piece is one of a kind, with natural variations in glaze, tone, and texture that speak to its handmade origin.
