Norikazu Ogawa

Japanese Silver Brush Shigaraki Plate, Granular Surface

Regular price $90.00 USD

This striking plate by Norikazu Ogawa, a Shigaraki-based ceramic artist and certified Traditional Craftsman, reflects his contemporary approach to traditional Shigaraki ware. Ogawa is known for allowing the natural character of Shigaraki clay to remain present while introducing refined, modern surface treatments.

The plate features a deep, earthy black-brown surface accented with expressive silver brushwork. Fine grog is densely dispersed throughout the clay body, creating a subtly granular surface punctuated by pale, mineral-like flecks. Against the dark ground, these inclusions give the clay an almost starlit quality while emphasizing its raw, earthy character.

Sweeping areas of silver move across the rim like spontaneous strokes of ink, creating a striking contrast with the textured clay beneath. Rather than appearing purely decorative, the silver retains the movement of the artist’s hand, giving each plate its own individual composition. As light moves across the surface, the metallic details subtly shift in tone and intensity.

Its restrained palette and irregular, organic form give the piece a distinctly contemporary presence while preserving the warmth and materiality characteristic of Shigaraki pottery. Both sculptural and functional, the plate offers a dramatic yet understated backdrop for food.

For a different expression of this design, similar plates with a smooth surface are available here.
