Japanese Traditional Uchiwa Fan
Meet the Japanese Traditional Uchiwa Fan, handcrafted by craftsmen in Japan.
A traditional Japanese uchiwa hand fan with a flat, rigid form—shaped like a paddle or rounded leaf—crafted for cooling, decoration, and ceremonial use. Made with finely illustrated paper mounted on a natural bamboo frame, it showcases elegant, intricate designs. Unlike folding fans, the uchiwa maintains a solid structure and appears in a wide range of styles, from ornate festival pieces to practical everyday fans once used for tasks such as fanning rice or kindling fires. Renowned regional styles, including Kyoto’s Kyo-uchiwa, highlight the fan’s cultural heritage and craftsmanship.
It is finished with persimmon astringent dye.
