Japanese Yomitanyama Makai Small Bowl with Plum Crest

Regular price $34.00 USD
Meet our Japanese Yomitanyama Makai Small Bowl with Plum Crest, handcrafted by Kyoji Matsuda of Kitagama in Yomitan, Okinawa Prefecture. Makai means “bowl” in Okinawan dialect.

It has a low height and wide mouth and is a fairly small bowl, perfect as a rice bowl or a side plate. Okinawan pottery has a solid, rustic feel.

This small bowl was fired in a traditional climbing kiln, nobori kama, called Yomitan North Kiln that is fired only 4 times annually. The kiln is jointly operated by four master craftsmen. The flat plates, makai, and bowls of this kiln have a ring in the center of the plate, which is characteristic of pottery fired in climbing kilns called janome. Since this product is fired in a climbing kiln, it is characterized by its unevenness and distortion compared to ones fired in electric kilns.
