Korean Buncheong Ceramic Earthy Bowl

Handcrafted by ceramic artist Hunseong Jang in Icheon, South Korea, this Buncheong bowl reflects the artist’s earthy and expressive approach to traditional Korean ceramics.

The softly rounded form is made from warm, iron-rich clay, its exterior animated by loosely applied passages of pale white slip. Rather than covering the surface uniformly, the slip gathers and recedes in irregular, painterly gestures, revealing areas of the dark clay beneath. Layers of warm brown, ochre, cream, and soft gray create a surface reminiscent of weathered stone and earth.

Inside, a subdued olive-gray glaze offers a quiet contrast to the raw, textural exterior. Subtle variations in form, glaze, and markings are intentionally retained, allowing the movement of the maker’s hand and the natural character of the materials to remain visible.

Rustic yet gentle in presence, the bowl embodies the spontaneity and understated beauty associated with Buncheong ware—a vessel in which irregularity, texture, and traces of process become an integral part of its character.
