Hunseong Jang

Korean Hoeryung Glazed Sabal with Silver-Coated Underside

Regular price $295.00 USD

This exceptional Hoeryung glazed sabal by Korean ceramic artist Hunseong Jang is a beautiful expression of traditional Korean pottery, distinguished by its dramatic glaze, elegant proportions, and richly textured surface.

The bowl features a gently flared silhouette, rising gracefully from a small, pronounced foot to a broad, subtly irregular rim. Its balanced form provides a striking canvas for the remarkable movement and depth of the Hoeryung glaze.

A deep, lustrous blue-black glaze envelops the rim, gradually giving way to cascading streaks of smoky blue, muted turquoise, and soft silvery green. These delicate, feather-like patterns radiate across the interior and flow down the exterior, creating an almost celestial effect reminiscent of mist, flowing water, or light emerging from darkness. The glaze gathers and thickens toward the base, forming expressive rivulets that reveal the fluid, unpredictable nature of the firing process.

The underside offers a beautiful contrast. The silver-coated treatment introduces a layer of subtle luminosity, complementing the cool, mineral tones of the glaze and bringing a contemporary refinement to the traditional vessel.

Rooted in the historic ceramic traditions of Hoeryung, the sabal reflects Jang’s sensitivity to the relationship between clay, glaze, and fire. The natural variations in its surface are not merely decorative but integral to the character of the work, capturing the spontaneity and transformation inherent in the ceramic process.

Both a functional vessel and a sculptural object, this sabal embodies a harmonious balance between tradition and contemporary artistry. Its captivating glaze, graceful form, and thoughtful interplay of materials make it a quietly powerful example of Korean studio ceramics.
