Korean Buncheong Scalloped High-footed Plate
Meet the Korean Buncheong Scalloped Plate by Korean ceramic artist Hunseong Jang is shaped with a softly undulating rim, giving the piece an organic, almost flower-like silhouette.
A pale layer of white slip settles gently over the clay body, creating the quiet, milky surface characteristic of Buncheong ware. Rather than appearing perfectly uniform, subtle variations in tone, traces of the clay beneath, and irregularities along the edge remain visible—details that speak to the hand of the maker and the spontaneity of the firing process.
The plate is raised on a tall, cylindrical foot, lending a sense of lightness and presence to its otherwise delicate form. Its scalloped edge curves naturally from one section to the next, allowing light and shadow to gather differently across the surface.
Rooted in the expressive tradition of Korean Buncheong, Hunseong Jang’s work embraces simplicity and imperfection. The restrained form and soft white surface give this small pedestal plate a quiet sculptural quality, beautiful on its own or used to present a small sweet, seasonal fruit, or other delicate accompaniment.

About Hunseong Jang: Hun Seong Jang is based in Icheon, South Korea where he owns his own ceramic studio. He studied Korean and Japanese ceramics for many years in search of Korean-ness. He specializes in making Korean buncheong ware.
