Korean Wood-Fired Guiyal Buncheong Sabal
A wood-fired buncheong sabal by Korean ceramic artist Kimo An of Tousanyo, finished with expressive guiyal (귀얄) brushwork.
The bowl is formed with an open, gently flaring profile and a substantial foot, retaining the subtle throwing lines of the wheel throughout its surface. Over the darker clay body, a creamy white slip has been applied with a broad brush in the traditional guiyal technique. The movement of the brush remains clearly visible, creating irregular bands of white, warm beige, and exposed clay rather than a completely uniform surface.
Wood firing adds another layer of variation to the piece. Flecks of ash, darker mineral markings, small surface irregularities, and shifts in tone appear naturally across the bowl, giving the glaze a lively, weathered quality. Inside, the circular movement of the slip follows the form of the vessel toward the center, emphasizing the rhythm of both the wheel and the artist’s hand.
The underside is comparatively raw and earthy, allowing the character of the clay body to remain visible around the foot, along with the artist’s mark.
Rooted in the spontaneity of traditional Korean buncheong ware, this sabal feels loose and expressive while remaining highly functional—a bowl whose surface records the gestures of making, brushing, and firing.
Fine surface cracking and irregularities are natural characteristics of the wood-firing process, reflecting the interaction of clay, glaze, ash, and flame inside the kiln. These variations are part of the individuality of each piece and are not considered defects.
