Wood-fired Shino Ceramic Katakuchi 片口 Matcha Whisking Bowl
Meet the Wood-fired Shino Ceramic Katakuchi Matcha Whisking Bowl, wheel-thrown by potter Hugh of Woodland Hills Pottery in Andes, New York, in the Catskills Mountain Region.
Katakuchi (片口) means "pouring lip on one side", and as the name indicates, the bowl comes with a serving spout so that you can whisk matcha and then pour it out into other cups. It has a deep, wide shape that makes whisking a large batch of matcha simple.
This one-of-a-kind Katakuchi bowl is characterized by the use of Shino glaze (#18) specially developed and concocted by Hugh and is combined with the ash deposits that occur during wood firing. Ash deposits occur because wood ash melts and flows onto the pottery surface, creating unique glaze effect and textures. The ash, generated during the combustion of wood, is carried through the kiln by the flames and settles on horizontal surfaces.
